Aims & approach

My Mind Check enables schools to proactively gather insights into the mental health and wellbeing of individual students, year levels, and the whole student population through supervised check-in sessions conducted at school.

Schools register to access their My Mind Check dashboard. Sessions are managed by the school and take 10-15 minutes, where students are invited to answer multiple-choice questions on a computer or tablet.

Following check-ins, My Mind Check provides schools with instant outcomes and practical, easy-to-implement follow-up resources, responsive to the needs and demands of school settings. The key objective in follow-up after check-ins is to communicate outcomes to students and caregivers and share curated information and resources.

Ongoing guidance and support with simple guides for every step are built in to help school staff, including for those with limited experience or expertise in the mental health and wellbeing space, and a dedicated School Support Team to assist when needed. For schools looking to explore additional follow-up options, recommendations of suitable in-school programs are available, along with resources to support further communication and goal-setting with students and caregivers.

Implementation support

  • Implementation training webinars or modules
  • Ongoing helpdesk, email or phone support
  • Regular webinars or access to community of professional practice

Evidence

My Mind Check was developed as an Australian Government initiative and delivered by childhood mental health experts. It addresses the importance of universal mental health screening and early identification. Developed from leading research into childhood and adolescent mental health, the check-in questions align with the typical developmental stage for each year level and cover topics that most commonly affect the mental health of young people in Australia.

The benefits of the check-in and follow-up guidance have been evaluated directly via randomised trials showing improvements in student mental health and reduction in school absences.
