Aligned with the Australian Curriculum's General Capabilities (Personal and Social Capability), PLAY promotes peer support and positive school values in Year 5-6 student leaders.
The morning session introduces the program and teaches students the necessary skills to run PLAY. In the afternoon, student leaders practice facilitating games with younger students under the guidance of the program's trainers. Student leaders become confident to run the PLAY program, supported by a designated teacher-in-charge.
Two experienced facilitators, all qualified teachers with VIT registration and/or Working with Children Checks, deliver the training on-site.
Participating schools receive a toolkit to assist with selecting student leaders and managing the program. There is also a version for Year 9-10 students called Game Changers.
The program is informed by Play Based Learning and Self Determination Theory, and is endorsed by a review of the program conducted by Dr Mark Kohler from the University of Adelaide. The experience is further supported by positive feedback provided by participants via student evaluation surveys. The PLAY program is on the Victorian Department of Education Mental Health Fund and Menu.
