Aims & approach

Positive Partnerships is a national project funded by the Australian Government Department of Education. It is delivered by Aspect (Autism Spectrum Australia).

High quality professional learning and resources are delivered through workshops, webinars and online modules for parents, carers, and school staff. This strengthens their capacity to support and advocate for autistic young people.

All Positive Partnerships resources are free to access across Australia. They are currently accessed by parents, carers and educators, as well as allied health and other professionals.

  • Regular webinars or access to community of professional practice

Evidence

The Positive Partnerships workshops and resources are based on various learning principles such as

  • Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a proven approach to supporting successful teaching and learning of autistic students.
  • Adult learning principles underpin the workshop content, focusing on self-directed learning, leveraging prior experiences, addressing real-life needs, and internal motivation.
  • 8 Aboriginal Ways of Learning principles inform the First Nations workshops, incorporating elements of Aboriginal pedagogy: narrative-driven learning, visualized learning processes, hands-on reflective techniques, the use of symbols and metaphors, place-based learning, lateral thinking, modelled and scaffolded learning, and community-centred approaches.

The workshops and resources are also aligned with evidence relating to supporting autistic students including needs analyses, guidelines on teaching practices and the Disability Standards for Education (DSE). They also recognise the importance of partnerships between school staff and families, informed by the Family-School Partnerships Framework.
