Rhythm and Movement for Self-Regulation (RAMSR) is a structured program designed to bring the brain, learning, and behaviour benefits of rhythmic movement to children under 8 years.
It can be delivered by any adult following training, with no prior music, rhythm, or movement background required. The program was developed by music therapists and music specialists.
It is generally delivered as 15-minute sessions twice per week, though there is flexibility in the frequency and the option to use activities as transition support across the school day.
Each session is a series of six fun rhythmic movement games that embed challenges for impulse control, mental flexibility, and working memory. Audio tracks to guide the activities are provided through a free app.
Teachers undertake either a self-paced online course, or a one-day training program to access all resources and develop the skills and knowledge required to deliver the program. Each program can last up to one full school year.
RAMSR is an approved provider for Victorian School Readiness Funding, the South Australia Preschool Boost, and the Queensland Kindy Uplift.
RAMSR draws on evidence from neurological music therapy, music education, the role of movement and embodied cognition in learning, and the developmental science of self-regulation and executive function.
Highly robust experimental evidence shows children exposed to RAMSR make faster gains in self-regulation, impulse control, and early academic skills, and show reduced behavioural problems, compared to children who do not engage in RAMSR.
RAMSR has been tested through an Australian RCT funded by an ARC DECRA awarded to Kate Williams. Latest publications include:
