Aims & approach

Seeing Through the Haze is a free evidence-based, curriculum-aligned vaping education resource for use in school settings with upper-primary and secondary school students.

Anchored in contemporary education and health promotion principles, the resource aims to prevent vaping uptake, by:
- Using a whole-school and strengths-based approach
- Building health literacy, critical thinking skills, protective behaviours and help-seeking strategies in young people, which can be applied to other health areas more broadly
- Encouraging inquiry-based learning with linkages to local community, cessation support services and the Achievement Program.

Structured as interconnected learning sequences, the Student Resource includes a range of activities that can be selected across the following modules:
- Getting the Facts - learn the foundational knowledge and skills required to understand vaping and its impacts on health
- See Through the Haze - examine the misinformation and marketing tactics used by industry and investigate cessation support options
- Making Change – students bring together their new knowledge and skills to create a campaign for change that can be applied within their school and local community

Additional resources are available to support school and health educators with the delivery of Seeing Through the Haze:

Teaching guides for Years 5-6 and Years 7-10 which includes:
- Answers and discussion guidance for the student activities
- An overview of the resource structure with best-practice teaching and learning approaches
- Clear curriculum links with lesson planning and delivery suggestions.

Lesson cards which provide school and health educators with flexible Seeing Through the Haze teaching options. Each Year level lesson card bundle offers:
- Three topics to choose from
- Flexible delivery formats across 3 or 2 lessons while maintaining key learning outcomes
- An outline of the suggested sequence of activities including learning intentions, curriculum links, preparation and delivery time as well as page references from the Seeing Through the Haze student resources.

Additional educator support resources are also available to support school and health educators with delivering vaping education resource Seeing Through the Haze while strengthening a whole school approach to reducing tobacco and vape-related harms in school environments:
- Easy-to-view professional learning videos exploring the purpose and objectives of Seeing Through the Haze, its alignment with key teaching and learning concepts, and practical delivery tips from teachers
- A school settings checklist to strengthen a whole school approach to reducing tobacco and vape-related harms in school environments

An online learning module Vaping and how to support cessation in community and education settings is coming soon.
