The Smiling Mind Primary School Program aims to strengthen the mental health and wellbeing of children through a whole-school, preventative approach to social and emotional learning (SEL).
At its core is a fully digital, ready-to-use curriculum aligned with the Australian Curriculum and designed for students in Years 1-6. The curriculum includes 120 sequenced lessons (20 per year level) and 18 interactive 'Brain Breaks' for younger students, helping children build foundational SEL capabilities such as self-awareness, emotional regulation, relationship skills, resilience, and overall mental wellbeing.
A key focus of the program is on developing students' mental fitness - the skills and habits that support emotional strength, focus, and flexibility in everyday life. Through repeated practice in the classroom, children learn how to manage their emotions, connect with others, and navigate challenges with greater confidence and calm.
Educators are supported through a comprehensive professional learning pathway, including a self-paced 'Mental Fitness Foundations' course, step-by-step implementation guidance, and regular on-demand training on topics such as trauma, ADHD, and anxiety.
The program is designed to be flexible and inclusive, empowering all educators, regardless of prior mental health training, to confidently deliver high-quality SEL. Additional resources for parents and school communities, plus a digital helpdesk, ensure that support is sustained and accessible.
The Smiling Mind Primary School Program is available as a Whole School Program. The 12-month subscription is based on the number of students within the school.
The Smiling Mind Primary School Program is informed by Mindfulness, Positive Psychology, Self-determination Theory, CASEL'S Theoretical Framework, Smiling Mind's Mental Fitness Framework, and the FISO (Vic Framework for Improving Student Outcomes).
The positive impact of the program is evidenced by data from independent evaluations as follows:
