Aims & approach

The Get GRIT Program is a whole-school, Tier 1 social and emotional learning program that gives children aged 5–12 proactive and preventative support for their mental health and wellbeing. It is built around four units, one for each letter of GRIT: Getting Along (social management), Resilient Thinking (self-management), Identifying Emotions (self-awareness and social awareness) and Taking Charge (self-management). Each unit has eight lessons per year level (32 lessons per year level). Every lesson includes a short student video, a lesson plan with teacher script, Learning Intentions and Success Criteria, differentiation for support and extension, trauma-informed practice notes and a Get GRIT Student Journal activity. Content and language are adjusted by year level so the same core ideas grow with students from Foundation to Year 6. A consistent whole-school language is reinforced through posters and classroom displays, and families are connected through parent resources, a parent webinar and the Get GRIT Parent Engagement App.

Evidence

Testimonials:

Anne-Marie Maw, Principal, Brisbane Catholic Education: “The scope and sequence and lesson design themed around the four terms provided vertical and horizontal alignment of the curriculum and a shared language of social emotional learning and wellbeing that was embedded throughout the school. I have seen the change in students out in the playground as they take charge of their feelings, talk through problems and move through situations with renewed confidence and strength. Get GRIT is the real deal!”

Donna Blaker, School Counsellor, Sacred Heart Primary School: “I’ve been searching for really good social/emotional education resources/programs for over 20 years and have tried many. Get GRIT is hands down the best by far.”
